Valley Roots

Traditional Foods

We believe restoring connections to traditional foodways is the most important path toward healing tribal communities' physical, spiritual, familial, and mental health.

Locally Grown Foods

Combining traditional foodways with locally and sustainably grown produce by fostering small farms and backyard gardens will reduce dependence on big ag imports that drain our river and natural resources.

Building Sustainability

Strengthening our local food system requires a holistic approach to raising commonly consumed livestock, growing sustainable crops and honoring our traditional foods by preparing and caring for them well.

We presently have two volunteer Certified Horse Healing Practitioners who believe the spirit of the horse is a path to overcome historical trauma, abuse, PTSD and disabilities.

Acorns are a vital staple to Northern California Tribal people. We are dedicated to teaching others how to gather, store, process and prepare this perfect protein while integrating it into the daily diet.

We incorporate traditional herbs and teachings into our wellness and health programming. Traditional medicines, combined with good nutrition, hold the key to improving our community's health.

We believe teaching modern small-scale agricultural practices empowers youth to pursue careers in community agriculture and stay local. We train youth to use farming equipment, raise livestock and basic farming techniques.

We are located in the Beautiful Hoopa Valley, the largest land-based reservation in California. There are approximately 3,500 people who reside in the Valley. Approximately 80% identify as American Indian.
